The story of the first mayor of Chicago
Ogden was born in 1805 in Walton, New York. Ogden’s path to becoming the first mayor of Chicago was not an easy one. When he was still young, Ogden’s father died. Young Ogden had to take over the family’s real estate business, which his father had run. At the same time, he attended law school.
After completing his education, he began his career as a lawyer in New York City. However, the developing city of Chicago in the western part of the country proved to be much more attractive. In 1835 Ogden moved there. Chicago, at that time, was still a small settlement that was emerging on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Moving to Chicago
Ogden’s arrival in Chicago coincided with a critical period of the city’s transformation. Recognizing the city’s enormous potential as a transportation hub, Ogden focused his efforts on expanding Chicago’s infrastructure. He played a key role in the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, a major project that connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. It turned Chicago into a vital link between the East Coast and the expanding western territories.
As his reputation grew, so did Ogden’s influence. In 1837, he was elected the first mayor of Chicago and served for a year. Ogden’s achievements as mayor

After becoming mayor, Ogden served on the Chicago Common Council as an alderman from the 6th Ward in 1840-1841. In 1847-1848, he served as alderman of the 9th Ward.
Ogden supported the development of Chicago both during his tenure as mayor and afterwards. When he arrived in Chicago, all the buildings in the city were constructed mainly of wood, there were no sidewalks or decent bridges, no paved roads and no water supply infrastructure. As mayor, he advocated for the city to collect tax revenue for new roads, sidewalks and bridges. In addition, Ogden used his personal finances to improve the city’s infrastructure.
