Rahm Israel Emanuel was born in 1959 in Chicago and grew up in a politically active family. His father, Benjamin Emanuel, was a pediatrician and civil rights activist. Emanuel’s greatest contribution to Chicago occurred during his time as a mayor. It was marked by a steady revival of the city’s economy, improvements in education and a fight against crime. Emanuel’s decision to close numerous public schools drew sharp criticism. However, he successfully implemented policies that reduced the city’s budget deficit and turned Chicago into a thriving center of economic activity.
